Clogged Sink or Disposal: Fix It Yourself: illustration

A slow sink or a disposal that only hums is a messy, annoying problem, and it is often easy to fix. The trick is to start with the least invasive step and work up.

For a slow or blocked sink

  1. Remove any visible debris from the drain opening.
  2. Run hot water and use a plunger. Block the overflow hole with a damp cloth, fill the sink with a little water and plunge firmly for 20 seconds.
  3. If it is still slow, put a bucket under the trap (the U-shaped pipe), loosen the slip nuts by hand, and clear what is inside.
  4. Reassemble, run water and check for leaks.

For a jammed garbage disposal

A disposal that hums but does not spin is usually jammed. A disposal that is silent may have tripped its reset button.

  1. Use a flashlight to look inside for a stuck item, and remove it with tongs.
  2. Look underneath for the hex socket in the centre of the bottom. Insert the hex key (usually supplied) and turn it back and forth until it spins freely.
  3. Press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit.
  4. Restore power, run cold water and test.

What not to put down the drain

  • Grease and cooking oil, which solidify in pipes.
  • Coffee grounds, eggshells and starchy foods like rice and pasta.
  • Fibrous vegetables such as celery or corn husks.
  • Chemical drain cleaners if you plan to use a plunger or a pipe wrench afterwards.

Prevent it

Run cold water while using the disposal and for 15 seconds after. Flush the drain with hot water now and then. A monthly baking soda and vinegar rinse can help with odours.
