TV Has Sound but No Picture: What to Check Before You Replace It
A practical checklist for a TV that has audio but a black or dim screen, including the flashlight test and when a repair is not worth it.

You can hear the show, so the TV is on. You just cannot see it. Before you start browsing for a new television, there is a short list of checks that separates a settings problem from a failing part.
Step 1: make sure it is not the input or the picture settings
- Press the input or source button and cycle through every input. A wrong source can give sound from a previous app but a blank screen.
- Check for a "screen off", "power saving" or "audio only" mode. Some TVs have an option that turns the picture off while music plays.
- Raise the brightness and backlight in the picture menu. If you cannot see the menu, the AI will help you find out whether it is visible at all.
Step 2: the flashlight test
Switch the room lights off and shine a bright torch or phone flashlight at an angle across the screen. Look closely.
- You can faintly see the picture: the image is being produced but the backlight is not lit. That points to the backlight or its power circuit, which is a repair for a technician.
- You see nothing at all: the problem may be the main board or the panel connection, or an input problem.
Step 3: power cycle properly
- Unplug the TV from the wall (not just off at the remote).
- Hold the TV's own power button for about 30 seconds to drain residual charge.
- Wait a couple of minutes, plug in, and try again.
Step 4: external devices and cables
If the TV shows the menu but the content is black, the problem may be the box, console or streaming stick. Try another input or device, reseat the HDMI cable at both ends, and swap the cable if you have a spare.
When to stop
If the flashlight test points to the backlight, or the set is more than a few years old and the quote is a large share of a new TV, the AI can help you weigh repair against replacement. See Repair or Replace?.

Frequently asked questions
What does a faint picture in a flashlight test mean?
It usually means the picture is being produced but the backlight is not lighting it, which points to a backlight or its power supply.
Can I fix a TV backlight myself?
It is not recommended. The internal boards carry mains voltage and capacitors can hold a charge, so this is a job for a professional.
Is it worth repairing an old TV?
Compare the quote with the price of a comparable new set. If the repair costs around half or more, replacing is often better.
