Washing Machine Won't Drain? A Live Walkthrough You Can Follow
A step-by-step example of fixing a washer that will not drain, from the simple checks to the filter, hose and pump, with the questions LiveFix AI would ask.

A washing machine full of cold, soapy water is one of the most common reasons people call a repair service. It is also, very often, a ten-minute fix. Here is what a session with LiveFix AI looks like, from the first question to the answer.
Step 1: rule out the easy stuff
The first questions are the cheap ones. The AI asks what the display says (some models show a code such as a drain error), whether the machine is set to a delay or a "no spin" option, and whether the drain hose is visibly bent behind the machine.
- Check for an error code on the display and read it out.
- Make sure the cycle is not paused or set to "hold rinse".
- Look at the drain hose behind the machine for kinks.
Step 2: find and clear the filter
Most front-loaders have a small access panel at the bottom front covering the drain pump filter. Pointing the camera at the lower front helps the AI tell you which style you have: a round twist-off cap, a small door, or a drain tube with a plug.
- Lay down a towel and a shallow tray, because water will come out.
- If there is a small emergency drain tube, pull its plug and let the water into the tray, a little at a time.
- Unscrew the filter slowly and clear what is in it: coins, hair ties, lint, a lonely sock.
- Rinse the filter, check the chamber behind it for anything stuck, and screw it back in firmly.
Step 3: if it still will not drain
If the filter was clean, the AI moves on to the next likely causes, in order of how easy they are to check.
- Drain hose: disconnect it at the standpipe and blow or run water through to check for a blockage.
- Standpipe or sink trap: a clog here can back water into the machine.
- Pump: if you can hear it humming but nothing moves, it may be jammed. If it is silent, it may have failed.
A silent pump, a burning smell or repeated error codes are the cases where the AI will suggest calling a technician, and it can help you describe the symptoms so the call is quicker.
What the session gets you
- A short, ordered list of checks instead of a dozen contradictory forum answers.
- Confirmation that you are looking at the right part on your machine.
- A clear point at which to stop and call someone.

Frequently asked questions
Where is the drain filter on a washing machine?
On most front-loaders it sits behind a small panel at the bottom front. Top-loaders usually have the pump at the base or no user-serviceable filter, so check your manual.
Is it safe to open the filter myself?
Yes, if the machine is switched off and unplugged and you catch the water with a towel and tray. Never work on it while it is connected to power.
When should I call a repair person?
If the filter and hose are clear but the machine still will not drain, the pump may have failed, which is a job for a technician.
